Marilee Krause and Molly Lipsher

September 10 through October 9, 2011

Painting landscapes using the medium of pastel is an obsession Marilee Krause and Molly Lipsher have in common. Everything else diverges.

Krause synthesizes the landscape with calm watercolor washes using strokes and smudges of pastel to create subtlety and detail in her serene nearly abstract paintings. “I am attracted to patterns in wet sand, to grasses and water coursing through land. I seek to paint geometry in nature.”

Lipsher shows the passage of time through swift movement and jagged lines. Layers of bright color radiate constant motion. She says, “I paint what we forget to see.  Places have voices. They loom, beckon, seduce and call out to me.”

Marilee Krause has painted the Santa Barbara area for 24 years. Molly Lipsher lives in Mission Viejo and has recently shown her work at the Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts.

Meet the artists at a reception on Saturday evening, September 10, from 5:00 to 7:00.
