Explore Byways as adventures in seeing the landscape through the eyes of the painter and photographer: driving along a country road bisected by lines and sharp curves, grey asphalt relieved by bunchgrass and lines of distant cottonwoods; walking beside calm canal waters on leaf-strewn paths under sycamores; finding the shade-dappled winding way through woods, not knowing what’s around the bend; making a beaten path through tall grass to the cliff’s edge. In these paintings, the journey is as important as the destination.
